New Caledonia , a small Pacific island that sits 16,000 kilometres from Paris, voted on Sunday to decide whether or not they should seek independence from France, which has owned the land since 1853.The 280,000 inhabitants of New Caledonia voted no, SBOBET with 56.4 per cent wanting to remain as part of the EU nation, while 43.6 per cent were in favour of independence. One of their most illustrious citizens is Christian Karembeu, the former Real Madrid and France footballer, who left the island to pursue his career. While he didn't want to explicitly discuss his vote, he has opened up on some of the talking points related to New Caledonia and the relationship with mainland France."I wore the Blues' shirt with great pride," he said."But I did not forget that I could have died when I was 15 or 16."I went to student demonstrations where people were killed by a stray bullet and it could have been me, so it was difficult to defend France and represent a country that had killed family and friends."The problems were deep-rooted in New Caledonia, SBOBET and it was not an easy existence for Karembeu."We advocate freedom, democracy and freedom of expression in France," he said. "But in New Caledonia I couldn't walk the streets, it's an obligation to know the Marseillaise and the history of France in schools."Does that happen in France? No."The football federation of New Caledonia registered with FIFA in 2004, after Karembeu won the World Cup with France in 1998, and occupy 155th in the world rankings.New Caledonia is one of the 17 colonies recognised by the United Nations and, for the time being, will remain under the French government.
